Tips For Designing Print For Your School Council Campaign

Just when you thought election season was over…

As you may have noticed, it’s a little quiet here on the Hotcards blog. We post all the time, but readers comments? Not so much. That’s why, when we get a request for advice on full color printing and design, we have to make a big deal about it.

So yesterday, Morgan Bowland asked for tips on designing a poster for a run at Student Council. Here’s what you’ve gotta do, Morgan:

Step 1:

Do you know anyone, and I mean ANYONE who does graphic design, or even who’s a good artist? Recruiting talented friends not only makes for a better poster, it gets people involved in your campaign, and the more people you get involved, the more people will vote for you.

Step 2:

Make it full color. Don’t settle for crappy black and white photocopies when full color printing is so cheap. I’m not saying you should print 1000 full color posters with Hotcards, I’m just saying that you’ll really stand out from the competition with bright, colorful printing that looks professional and not all kindergarten.

Step 3:

Make your poster exciting. Have a look around town or online at posters for bands and events at cool clubs. Musicians always have the coolest posters, and the best way to start designing is by being inspired. So check out poster archives here, and here, and here to get your creative mind working.

Step 4:

FOCUS your message. You can put all kinds of cool stuff in your poster to grab people’s attention, but what you really want them to remember is “MORGAN BOWLAND FOR STUDENT COUNCIL.” So put that message in huge letters, front and center, and make sure the font you choose is easy to read. Also remind people WHERE and WHEN to vote, because sometimes candidates lose elections just because their supporters forget about Election Day.

Step 5:

Once you’ve finished your design, it’s time to start printing posters. The last and best way you can stand out from the competition is by choosing a higher quality paper than most of your competitors. Most people will probably just use whatever’s in the printer. If you can spare a couple bucks for thicker paper with a glossy finish, your posters will look more like the kind of stuff printed by professionals, and less like ads for lost cats and garage sales, which most people don’t notice because they’re so freakin’ boring!
